How the system failed missing children Harmony Montgomery & Oakley Carlson

Harmony Montgomery and Oakley Carlson lived on opposite sides of the country. They never met each other and neither had the chance to even live their own lives.

Both Harmony and Oakley vanished while in the care of their parents - the very people who were meant to nurture, care and protect them.

Harmony was last known to be alive in 2019. She would be 7 years old if she is alive today. Harmony’s early years were sad - both her parents had drug abuse issues and Harmony had been in foster homes. She was eventually returned to the custody of her father Adam, and that decision sealed her fate.

It finally came to light in 2021 that Harmony had not been seen for years. Her biological mother has just now been speaking publicly and insists she has been trying to find Harmony. Police have been searching the last locations in New Hampshire that Harmony was known to be at and nothing has been found. Adam has now been arrested on charges related to the abuse and neglect of Harmony.

Oakley Carlson also had a rough start to life. She had been placed with a foster family when she was a baby and she lived with them for years. The foster family have said publicly that they were devastated when Oakley was returned to the care of her biological parents.

Her foster mother Jamie said “They made a mistake. “A big mistake. I told them in my last letter it was going to be on their shoulders if something happens to her.”

A school principal raised the alarm about not seeing Oakley in December 2021. Police began to investigate and discovered that Oakley had not been seen since February 2021.

Oakley’s parents Andrew Carlson and Jordan Bowers have been investigated and they have since been charged with apparently withholding potentially life saving medication from one of Oakley’s siblings.

As of mid January 2022, there is no sign of either Harmony or Oakley.

Murdered While Hiking | Rachel Morin, Meredith Emerson & Lauren Heike

Murdered While Hiking | Rachel Morin, Meredith Emerson & Lauren Heike

TIMESTAMPS Mackenzie Shirilla final thoughts (7:01) Hiking Murders (10:36) According to a study by the Outdoor Industry Association, 43% of women who hike have experienced some form of violence or harassment while on a trail. This includes everything from unwanted comments or advances to actual physical assault. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the cases of three different women who were murdered while hiking. Rachel Morin went for a hike in Bel Air, Maryland on August 5, 2023.  Her boyfriend raised the alarm later that night when she didn’t return.  Her body was found on a trail the following day.  Rachel’s killer is still at large and police believe he may be responsible for an assault in Los Angeles earlier this year.  The worry is that the perpetrator is escalating in the severity of his crimes. Meredith Emerson took her dog Ella for a hike on New Year’s Day in 2008.  She ran across Gary Michael Hilton on the trail.  Gary attacked Meredith and he kept her alive for three terrifying days, before brutally murdering and decapitating her.  Gary has since been charged with three additional murders. Lauren Heike had recently moved from Washington to Arizona.  She told a friend on April 28, 2023 that she was grateful to be able to get a coffee and go for a walk that day.  Lauren did not show up for work when she was meant to and her body was found on April 29.  She had been stabbed 15 times while out for a walk.  Zion William Teasley (22) has been arrested and charged with Lauren’s seemingly random murder. Hell on Wheels | Mackenzie Shirilla

Hell on Wheels | Mackenzie Shirilla

Ohio teen Mackenzie Shirilla had been dating Dominic Russo for years and their relationship was described as tumultuous.  A friend overhead an argument between the two in July 2022 where Mackenzie threatened to crash the car she was driving, with both of them in it. A few weeks later, Mackenzie did exactly that.  Early one morning, after a night of partying, she crashed her vehicle into a wall at 100mph.  Dominic died along with a friend of the pair, Davion Flanagan.  Mackenzie was injured and taken to hospital, where she recovered. By October 2022, Mackenzie was well enough to dress up as a corpse for Halloween, despite just losing two of her closest friends. Mackenzie was eventually arrested and her case has just gone to court.  She was convicted and is currently serving a minimum of 15 years in prison.  Her family argue that the crash was an accident caused by a medical condition, but the judge did not believe that story.  In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the case of Mackenzie Shirilla. We also discuss creepy updates in the case of the BTK serial killer.  Police have released sketches done by Dennis Rader and have asked the public for help in identifying the people and locations in the drawings.  We discuss these developments in this episode. Vacation Nightmares | Elly Warren & Heather Mack

Vacation Nightmares | Elly Warren & Heather Mack

As summer draws to a close in the Northern Hemisphere, we are going to discuss two Vacation Nightmare cases in this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast. Australian woman Elly Warren travelled to Africa in 2016 for the trip of a lifetime.  She had been scuba diving with marine biologists and had been swimming with Manta Rays.  One night, towards the end of her vacation, she went to a bar in Tofo Beach, Mozambique for a few drinks and to catch up with friends.  She indicated to the group that she was going to get a drink and she would be back to join them.  When Elly didn’t come back, her friends assumed she had gone back to their hostel.  Elly’s body was found the next morning, outside a public bathroom.  Mozambique officials have given varying stories about how Elly died.  Her family believes she was murdered and an investigation is ongoing to this day. Heather Mack and her mother Sheila had a contentious relationship.  Police were called to their family home on average once a month.  There were allegations of abuse and violence between the pair.  In 2014, Sheila paid for herself and Heather to fly first class to Bali for a vacation.  They checked into luxury hotels, but their relaxation didn’t last long.  Heather stole her mother’s credit card and bought airplane tickets for her boyfriend Tommy to join them in Bali.  When Tommy arrived in Bali, he fought with Sheila and their altercation turned deadly.  Sheila was beaten to death and her body was stuffed in a suitcase.  Heather and Tommy were arrested in connection with her murder and they were incarcerated in Indonesian prisons.  Heather was pregnant at the time of the murder – she gave birth and her baby lived in the squalid jail cell with her for years. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the cases of murdered Australian woman Elly Warren and the case of suitcase murderer Heather Mack. **TIMESTAMP** If you’d like to skip straight to the crime content, please go to (11:18) Read our blogs for these cases - https://truecrimesocietyblog.com/2023/09/05/australian-woman-elly-warren-murdered-in-mozambique/ https://truecrimesocietyblog.com/2023/09/05/heather-mack-the-bali-suitcase-murder/ We are now on Patreon!  Thank you for your support -  patreon.com/Truecrimesociety

Missing | Morgan Bauer & Yohanes Kidane

Missing | Morgan Bauer & Yohanes Kidane

In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the separate cases of two missing people – Morgan Bauer and Yohanes Kidane. Morgan Bauer was 19 in 2016 when she left the small town in South Dakota where she had grown up, for the bright lights of Atlanta, Georgia.  Morgan embarked on her adventure with only dollars to her name.  The excitement quickly turned to desperation.  Morgan was thrown out of the accommodation that she had arranged to stay in and she frantically tried to find employment.  Morgan had only been in Georgia for a few weeks before friends and family realized that they hadn’t heard from her.   As of August 2023, Morgan remains missing and the two people who were last known to have been with her have been arrested in connection with her murder. Yohanes Kidane had the world at his feet.  He graduated from Cornell University earlier in 2023 and had relocated from New York to the Bay Area in California to take up a promising job with Netflix.  Yohanes spoke to his brother on Sunday August 13 and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.  When Yohanes’ siblings checked his location the following day, they saw that this phone was the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.  When his family called the phone, it was answered by a stranger who had found Yohanes personal belongings including his laptops, ID and wallet.  Yohanes is thought to have taken an Uber from his apartment in San Jose to the bridge.  He remains missing.   Did something sinister happen to Yohanes while in the ride share or did he travel to the Golden Gate Bridge for another reason? There have been updates in the Bryan Kohberger murder case and killer nurse Lucy Letby has been sentenced for killing multiple infants.  We discuss these updates in the episode. Mushroom Mania | Erin Patterson

Mushroom Mania | Erin Patterson

Erin Patterson invited her elderly relatives, including her estranged in-laws, over for lunch in late July 2023 in rural Victoria, Australia.  She made them a meal of Beef Wellington, which they all enjoyed.  She told police that she and her children also consumed the meal. The day after the lunch, all of the guests became so ill they had to attend hospital.  Three of them would pass away, and the fourth is fighting for his life, waiting for a liver transplant. Erin has given a statement to police saying that she made the meal with dried mushrooms that she purchased from an Asian grocer.  She cannot remember the name of the store where she made the purchase.  She also threw out her food dehydrator after her husband questioned if she had poisoned his parents. Cyber Crimes | The Ebay Stalking Scandal & The Suicide of Nate Bronstein

Cyber Crimes | The Ebay Stalking Scandal & The Suicide of Nate Bronstein

An estimated 850,000 adults in the United States are cyberstalked each year. Ina and David Steiner run a blog called ECommerceBytes.  Their website is a resource for sellers on a number of platforms, from Etsy to Amazon.  In 2019, Ina wrote some pieces regarding eBay and the exorbitant salaries of their executives.  These articles got the couple onto the radar of senior executives at the company.  A bloodied pigs head face mask and a funeral wreath were among the terrifying objects sent to Ina and David.  There is currently a lawsuit ongoing between the Steiners and the people involved in the cyberstalking incidents. Teenager Nate Bronstein was struggling with not being able to attend school during the pandemic in 2021.  He changed to the prestigious Latin School in Illinois, mainly because they were offering face-to-face classes.  When he started at the new school, the other students were not quick to help Nate to fit in.  Nate was bullied relentlessly on social media and was told to kill himself.  In January 2022, Nate hanged himself from the shower in his home.  In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the cyberstalking of Ina and David Steiner, as well as the cyberbullying that resulted in the suicide of Nate Bronstein.
