He fled the country in 2019 when he was facing charges related to a cryptocurrency scam. He was arrested in Spain in October 2020 and extradited to the United States in March 2021. John pleaded not guilty to the tax evasion charges but was found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona just hours after a Spanish court agreed to extradite him to the US to face tax evasion charges. There were rumors that he was killed off like Epstein, but it is unknown if that is true.
