Episode 185: Why Gerry 'the Monk' Hutch is continuing to fight for his reputation in the court of public opinion

Gerry The Monk Hutch has vigorously defended his 'innocence and reputation' at the Special Criminal Court where he is on trial for the murder of David Byrne. In advance of opinion evidence which was given to the court by Detective Superintendent David Gallagher of the Garda's Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, his counsel, Brendan Grehan SC asked the court to respect his presumption of innocence of the past, present and future.DS Gallagher later told the court the Hutch Organised Crime Group was an intergenerational group run in a patriarchal system but that it is fluid and less structured than many other organised groups.Today I'm talking with my colleague Niall Donald about how 'the Monk' values his reputation and why he continues to fight for his image in the court of public opinion. A survivor of the Cold War and of the notorious Russian Gulags, Imre Arakas was an international hitman who washed up on our shores like a character dreamed up in a work of fiction. His paymaster for this trip was Daniel Kinahan, the son of Christy Kinahan Snr and director general of the Irish mafia on the Costa Del Sol where Arakas lived. He’d worked for them before and he’d always been paid swiftly and efficiently on completion of a jobHe’d flown into Dublin with a tent, a little camping stove, fishing rods and binoculars, looking every bit the nature lover who enjoyed holidays in the great outdoors.Despite his celebrity as an international hitman for hire, Arakas was confident that nobody would know him in Ireland and that he could pass off as a tourist. It didn’t quite work out like that though. This is his story. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 184: The extradition of Imre Arakas and his doomed trip to Dublin to kill James 'Mago' Gately

He looks a far cry from the international legend first arrested in Ireland in April 2017 on a trip to murder Kinahan cartel target James ‘Mago’ Gately.Gone are the chiselled good looks of the suave International hitman for hire and when Imre Arakas appeared in the Irish High Court this week before Justice Paul Burns he looked more like a desert island castaway resigned to his fate – a one way trip to Lithuania where he faces murder charges.Today I’m joined by my colleague Eamon Dillon as we discuss the extradition of Imre Arakas, the doomed trip to Dublin on a mission to kill that ended his lengthy career and the mobs from home and abroad brought down by their own bad decisions. Episode 181: How Dubai became the new Costa del Crime for the world's gangsters

Episode 181: How Dubai became the new Costa del Crime for the world's gangsters

It’s been a place of refuge for countless mega-rich European drug traffickers who have beaten a golden path to the luxury Gulf state of Dubai over the past 10 years. And when a super cartel of the biggest cocaine traffickers sat down to do business at Daniel Kinahan's 2017 wedding at the seven-star Burj Al Arab hotel they couldn’t have felt safer. But arrests, deportations and sanctions have followed - with two now in prison and two left behind, trapped in their own luxury prisons. So how did Dubai become the new Costa Del Crime and how committed are police and rulers in the United Arab Emirates to handing back the crooks?Nicola Tallant talks with author and journalist Carl Fellstrom, who details the ancient Hawala money laundering system that has made crime easy, about the British drug trafficker who led the way to the Gulf at the turn of the century, and about the A-list traffickers - including the Kinahan mob - who followed to the cash-rich desert paradise.
