INSECURITY – HOW SAFE ARE WE? FT. OSHODI

There have been concerns about the state of Nigeria for a long time, but now it is getting closer to home. During the week some presidential guards were attacked and killed in the Nation’s capital. Killings, kidnappings, loss of property, and fear of the unknown have even compounded the economic hardship.

These terrorists are growing bolder to have carried out attacks on presidential guards in the Capital, that is how worst it can get; now what should be the concern of the masses?

When does this end? Is the President not also tired? We are a few months to the election and people are still worried, are we sure we are not sitting on a keg of gunpowder?

Our hosts Adewunmi Oshodi-Tapa turned the mic to the audience to air their views on the security status of their families, environment, and the country at large

The first caller was Ladi from Festac who said the government allowed this insecurity to degenerate, he said what could have been stopped in its early phase has now become massive insecurity. The right thing according to him is not being done because of greed by those in power. He called out on politicians to know that their office is determined by the existence of a people to govern.

Another caller Taoreed from Lekki insisted that the president was intentional about not acting, even after his envoy, the Presidential guard was attacked, nobody has been sacked.

Eloka from Surulere listed the characteristics of a failed state to be when a part of a nation’s territory is being occupied by foreign threats and when the constitution of a nation is partially or wholly suspended among others. He said these qualities are evident in Nigeria.

Oluwaseun from Ogba, having responsible citizens would ensure a safe country. He said the present day’s focus and quest to make money not minding the source has increased security threats around and many values have been lost compared to the previous generation. He urged governments to put structures in place to ensure that people are responsible on their own so that it can spread to society.

Remi from Ikorodu said many individuals who are not even so wealthy have security personnel attached to them, not because of robbery but to protect themselves from other security threats like kidnapping. He berated tagging the criminals as bandits in place of the name terrorists. He went on to refer to a memo from ECOWAS warning their staff about some insecure locations in Nigeria, this is to emphasize the height of insecurity in the country. He said Nigeria isn’t prepared for what is coming.

Also, Joshua from Ikorodu says the government has gagged the media, and people now find it hard to tell and admit the truth, people will rather protect one man at the expense of the country.

Everyone is encouraged to treat people well - guards, community members, and security agencies even if they are annoying, let’s try to be kind to them. Some of these security threats come from among us…
