Caitlin's Falcons are off this week, but she's hoping for a Seattle win for an easier road to the Superbowl. Yay sports! Natalie hasn't been to American sporting events, but she's been to a couple of ballparks, including Comerica Park with the giant sculpted Tigers outside the park. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, episode 6, "Family": -Synopsis -We go on a bit of an Amy Adams tangent, but Caitlin brings it back around. -So, Buffy knows what's going on with Dawn, and she tells Giles, but decides to keep it a secret from everyone else. This is going to go SO well. *note sarcasm* -A little spoiler Netflix art discussion. -Buffy moves out of her dorm and back home to keep an eye on Dawn. All the thoughts. -Riley has some issues in this episode. -What exactly does Riley have beside Buffy in his life? -This is a Tara-centric episode! Yay! -We finally know why she stole that powder from the spell all those episodes back! -Mitch is still having issues believing that Tara isn't evil, but she is totally human with powers and yay for Willow not losing another lover. -It may have been interesting if Tara was part demon, just to explore the dynamics of evil demons and non-evil ones. -That Cordy line instigates a lot of thought from Natalie. It would have been a shame to miss him and all his floppiness. -We dissect Angel's accents. -Wesley plays one hell of a great Angel. We are so here for this. -Angel's persona stands for itself. We can't decide. -Caitlin fun fact: This episode is where she gave up her last rewatch. -Bethany: brunette, telekinetic, damaged character with a tragic backstory. -Angel writers definitely didn't pull any punches this episode with Bethany's backstory. -We were definitely impressed with Daisy McCracken's performance. -If you screw up at Wolfram and Hart, you lose limbs, probably your head. -Why does anyone work there?!?! -Lila vs. Lindsay: Do we find them equally interesting? -It wouldn't be an Angel discussion without a little Cordy talk. We just love her. -Cordy wants to pay Gunn, and watching that all go down was just hysterical. -Bethany confronts her father, takes control of her power, and escapes Lila and Wolfram and Hart. -We would be happy to have Bethany back at some point. -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Listener Feedback: -Xander has a twin? Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, episode 3, "The Replacement": -Anya and Natalie are alike, do you see it? -Xander is back in the spotlight, how do we feel about him? -Maybe we can finally get Xander to recognize his full potential! -It was interesting that no one had a problem accepting both sides of Xander -Anya has a huge issue with mortality -Where does Anya live? -This Toth guy was... useless? -Did we know that Xander was not evil? -Dawn, what do we know about her? Why don't we have any answers? -Their dynamic is very petty and immature -Let's talk about that TRUTH BOMB Riley drops on Xander -Does this mean that Riley is leaving us? -Xander loses his ideal image of true love -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Angel season 2, episode 3, "First Impressions": -Gunn and Cordelia's moment at the end felt very flat -What do we think about Gunn's addition to the group? -Does Gunn play a parallel role to Angel? -This demon was just so... rubbery -Brittany is the David of the Angel group -The karaoke guy is back! -Gunn's involvement should be more fun! -"I like that it has bang in it" -New ship name alert: Gundy -Darla's dreamscape adventures -What is Wolfram and Hart's end game here? -Is Angel approaching true happiness again? -Brittany geeks out about Angelus... again. Join us as we discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, episode 2, "Real Me," and Angel season 2, episode 2, "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been." Superfans: Caitlin and Karen Newbies: Kristen and Mitch Fun Facts: Kristen is not-so-excited about the snow she's expecting in Ohio, but she added to her Sven collection last night, so that's good fun. Mitch adds that he saw Sven on the new Frozen ride at Epcot. Karen got herself some yummy Buffalo mac and cheese that was almost cheese soup. And Caitlin gives us our weekly Gage update, including the fact that he has made it outside like 10 feet or so! Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, episode 2, "Real Me": -Synopsis -First thoughts about Dawn. We were introduced to her last episode, but now we actually meet her. -What was up with that crazy man? Does Dawn belong, or doesn't she? -Dawn's presence has affected Buffy's personality, do we like it? Or is it kinda obnoxious? -Is Dawn a character from a different Buffy-verse? Are we now in Dawn-verse? Are we overthinking this? -Buffy's arch-nemesis is back! Harmony, that is. -Harmony has minions and we all rejoice at this fact. -Harmony and her minions enact their plan and everyone shakes in their boots... not. -Were we ever actually worried for Dawn in those final moments? -We get a little off track picturing Giles as Danny Tanner. Don't ask. We got there. -Giles finds his purpose! I can't wait to see him as the magic shop owner. -We all get a little worried about Giles and the Defense Against the Dark Arts position. -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Angel season 2, episode 2, "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been": -Synopsis -Were we surprised to see Angel in L.A. before the Angel timeline began? -Caitlin shares some quotes about this episode from the episode's writer, Tim Kinnear. -We saw some changes in Angel from the 50's to the present. -In addition to the Angel development, we see McCarthy era L.A. and get a storyline that reflects the time period. -This episode is weirdly appropriate to our current political climate. -Could this possibly be the most tragic story yet? -Judy spent 50 years being fed on and nothing else. She had lost all hope. -The newbies weren't too surprised to see Judy there, but it didn't take away from the tragedy of it all. -We collectively are excited to see Angel Investigations get a new home. Cordy will totally make it feel at home. -The hotel is totally a parallel for Angel's life. It has a dark past, but thanks to a cleansing has a bright future. -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Listener Feedback: -Tweets give us a few thoughts about Judgement. Some characters that will be around for a while, and appreciation for "Mandy." -A comment digs into the miscommunication trope problem. We definitely agree, but you don't always learn your lesson the first time. -Another comment digs into the predictions from "Restless" and asks if we'll be trying to acknowledge those as they come true. We'll certainly try. Mitch's Musings/Kristen’s Kontemplations –Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, episode 3, "The Replacement" –Angel season 2, episode 3, "First Impressions" Contact us! Episode #190: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ 5x01, ‘Angel’ 2x01 – Vampire Orgy

Episode #190: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ 5x01, ‘Angel’ 2x01 – Vampire Orgy

Join us as we discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, episode 1, "Buffy vs. Dracula," and Angel season 2, episode 1, "Judgement." Superfans: Caitlin and Karen Newbies: Danielle and Mitch Fun Facts: Mitch is allergic to the mold in Seattle, Caitlin is no longer super unemployed and will be teaching five classes across two separate colleges, Danielle is getting a jump start on her Oscar bait/best picture watching, and Karen is actually getting into the Christmas spirit this year but can't wear her fun Christmas sweater because it still has an electronic tag on it. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, episode 1, "Buffy vs. Dracula": -Synopsis -How do we feel about this sort of gimmicky episode? Was it fun or obnoxious? -Spoiler alert, everyone pretty much enjoyed it. -Do we think Dracula will be coming back at some point, whether it's as just an appearance or as the big bad? -Anya is now a series regular. FINALLY. -But are they bringing Anya into the "series regular" fold in order to kill her off? -So much Veronica Mars love on this Veronica Mars ReWatchable reunion. -Was Xander the MVP of this episode even though he was brainwashed? -"Death by vampire orgy." "There are worse ways to go." You go, Giles. -Buffy's bedroom scene was uncomfortable, but Sarah Michelle Gellar has a way of making the scene the perfect amount of erotic. -Dracula is here to continue the discussion of what it actually means to be a Slayer and who the Slayer is in terms of light and dark. -How do ideas and flashes of "Restless" play into this episode? -Thank goodness Giles isn't going anywhere because we would've been devastated. -Buffy demonstrates how far she's come by realizing she needs Giles' help and asking for it. -Will Giles always be a necessary character moving forward? Will he still be around at the series finale or will his purpose run out beforehand? -So Buffy apparently has a sister? But HOW?! Is there some sort of DC TV "Flashpoint" event going on here? -Danielle totally thought that the new demon from Angel was Spike after he came down with some sort of sickness. So there's that. -Favorite scenes (AKA Riley is so useless now.) -Favorite lines Angel season 2, episode 1, "Judgement": -Synopsis -What significance do all of these children that have popped up have? -There have been quite a few seers popping up on Angel so far as well. Are we supposed to read into this? -Why Darla? Why now? -Does the "long game" mystery in Angel have substance? Why does it bother us so much? -Okay, so the demon karaoke bar is pretty much awesome. -The newbies are super into Green Spiky Guy. Like suuuuuuuuper into him. He'd better come back. -The super fans are having a really hard time talking about the demon bar and Green Spiky Guy. Like, more than usual. -Is Cordelia less funny now that she's maturing? -So how much do we all like Gunn? -Angel can be a real boy again sometime and we see the promise of his immortality ending being so important to him. -Food talk time-out. Because of course. -Angel visits Faith in jail and it's actually a really touching scene. -Favorite scenes -Favorite lines (and we talk about how awesome this episode's credits are) Listener Feedback: -A listener asks for the newbies to give a dramatic reenactment of their reactions to the revelation of Buffy having a sister. -Karen and Danielle haven't seen the Lost finale, so they sadly can't relate to a listener's comment. Episode #189: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ 4×22, ‘Angel’ 1×22 – Impostor Syndrome

Episode #189: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ 4×22, ‘Angel’ 1×22 – Impostor Syndrome

Join us as we discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 4, episode 22, "Restless," and Angel season 1, episode 21, "To Shanshu in L.A." Superfans: Natalie Newbies: Brittany, Kristen and Ariana Fun Facts: Danielle started watching Search Party, Selina went to a Monet exhibit, Kristen saw Moana, and Caitlin put up her Christmas tree, which initially scared Gage, but now he's sleeping under it like the present he truly is. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 4, episode 22, "Restless": -Synopsis -This episode ends season 4, but really feels like a fresh start for season 5. -Initial thoughts. -Selina has a lot of love for this episode and is always finding new things in the dreamy madness. -The newbies had some trouble with this episode, but maybe that's kind of in its design? -Did Joss intend for this episode to be rewatched to suss out all the hidden meaning? -Willow's dream: She's getting ready to hit the stage in a crazy production of Death of a Salesman, starring Willow as current Willow. -There's a lot of insecurity at play here, as Willow seems very concerned about who she truly is beneath the surface. -Willow seems to be suffering from Impostor syndrome. -Does Willow fear that she will revert to her high school self, or does she just always feel like that young, naive, inexperienced girl. -Xander is a bit of a different story. His dream sequence was the longest, probably because he's got more going on in his head than the others at the moment. -The playground scene where Giles and Spike are swinging on the swingset plays into the dynamics of Xander's role in the Scooby gang. -While Xander has sexy dreams about Tara, Willow, and even Joyce, Buffy seems to have taken on a wholly sisterly role in his subconscious. -However it could also be frustration about never being a romantic option for Buffy. -Some brief Apocalypse Now flashes including a cameo from Principal Snyder. -The show wanted to bring back more characters from the past, including Larry, Jenny Calendar, etc, but we only got a few cameos. -Giles dream begins with a very childlike Buffy and Olivia pushing a pram. -The double meaning of Giles' father-like devotion to Buffy and her also being the thing keeping him from living his life is on full display here. -Giles performance in this episode birthed the idea of the musical episode in Joss Whedon's head, so we have that to look forward to. -Giles is playing with his different roles, ending with him finding his watch, quite literally being the watcher. -Buffy's dream starts with that unmade bed, reminding us of Faith's dream from a few episodes back. -Tara played all the parts that they couldn't fill with former characters. -There's a lot of meaning in Tara's line, "Be back by midnight." -What was with Joyce being trapped in the wall? Maybe Buffy is feeling separated from her mother. -Sequence of the First Slayer. We've heard others say that Slayers aren't supposed to have friends, but hearing that from the First Slayer forces you to think about what kind of role Buffy's Slayer-ness plays in all her decisions. -Slayers and Watchers have been around since the beginning of time. -Buffy's dreams get to the source of Buffy's power, and the role that her friends have played in making her who she is. -The First Slayer not being able to speak for herself is problematic, and we had a few issues with Tara being the one to speak for her. Is she a reliable narrator? -Each of the characters has their own internal struggle that came to the forefront in this episode. -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Angel season 1, episode 22, "To Shanshu in L.A.": -Synopsis -The episode starts with the revelation of the prophecy and Cordy and Wesley trying to help him be more connected to the world. -Cordy gets a constant stream of visions and it's completely debilitating. -Did we see Wesley's attack coming? -What do you think this means for Angel's apartment & the Angel Investigations set? -Kate is so frustrating. We don't have many nice things to say. -Angel was at this wit's end and Kate tried to add to that and Angel wasn't having any of it. -We do have one idea for how Kate could be interesting going forward. -More Gunn. We like Gunn a lot and would love to see him more. -Lindsey plays an interesting role in the finale. What do we expect to see from him going forward? -We solve the mystery of what Shanshu actually means! -Oh, and Darla's back. Sigh. -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Listener Feedback: -A cornucopia of comments just in time for us to be thankful on Thanksgiving weekend in the U.S. -Twitter gives us lots of love for Lindsay, the seasons to come, and Restless. -Hypable comments dove into depth on what there is to love about "Primeval" and "Restless," more love for the later seasons of Buffy, and some reminders of the great things that season 4 gave us, despite its shortcomings.
