Once upon a time, there lived a man named Charles Perrault. He was in the court of King Louis XIV when France was a deeply Catholic country and all fairy tales needed to have moral lessons. Not quite as violent as versions that came before and after, Perrault's Cinderella tells us a lot about human nature and what was expected of people in society at the time.
