Episode 172 - Bob Odenkirk: From Sketch Comedy Pioneer to Dramatic Powerhouse

Dive into the extraordinary career of Robert John Odenkirk, the acclaimed American actor, screenwriter, comedian, and producer. This biographical deep dive traces Odenkirk's evolution from the trenches of influential comedy writing to his iconic transformation into a dramatic star.

Odenkirk's early years were foundational to modern sketch comedy. He worked as a writer for Saturday Night Live (1987–1991) and contributed to the Emmy-winning writing of The Ben Stiller Show (1992). He also served as a writer on Late Night with Conan O'Brien during the show's 1993 and 1994 seasons. His status as a comedy pioneer was cemented when he co-created and starred in the seminal HBO sketch comedy series, Mr. Show with Bob and David (1995–1998), alongside David Cross. Later, Odenkirk reunited with Cross for the Netflix sketch series W/ Bob & David (2015).

Odenkirk's career shifted dramatically when he gained recognition and acclaim as the corrupt lawyer Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill. This fan-favorite role spanned AMC's Breaking Bad (2009–2013) and its widely successful spin-off, Better Call Saul (2015–2022). His compelling dramatic performance in Better Call Saul earned him numerous accolades, including six nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and three wins for the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series.

Explore the breadth of his diverse filmography, which includes supporting roles in critically successful films like Nebraska (2013), The Post (2017), and Little Women (2019). Odenkirk transitioned impressively into an action star with the lead role in the action-thriller Nobody (2021), a film he also produced, and is set to return for the sequel, Nobody 2 (2025).

Discover his work behind the camera, including directing features such as Melvin Goes to Dinner (2003), Let's Go to Prison (2006), and The Brothers Solomon (2007). Learn about his recent endeavors, including his critically acclaimed, Tony-nominated Broadway debut as Shelly Levene in a revival of Glengarry Glen Ross (2025), his Emmy-nominated guest turn as Uncle Lee in the FX series The Bear (2023), and his published memoir, Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama (2022).

This episode also addresses the shocking moment when Odenkirk suffered a severe heart attack on the set of Better Call Saul in 2021, and how he recovered and returned to work. Join us as we celebrate the life and enduring career of this entertainment polymath, who has earned two Primetime Emmy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
