Florida Woman Kills Both of Her Exes in the Same Day | 6AM 12.24.25

Rex Heuermann was initially arrested and charged in the deaths of the women known in the press as "The Gilgo Four": Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. A year later, Heuermann faces additional charges of second-degree murder in the killings of two more women, Jessica Taylor and Sandra Castillo, who were found in the same area as the Gilgo Four. After his arrest, investigators seized several electronic devices from Heuermann, including a laptop containing a secret Microsoft Word document titled "HK2002-04," which they describe as a "blueprint" for the architect's murders. Even more disturbing, investigators believe that the alleged serial killer Rex Heuermann may have kept his victims alive for several days to inflict pain and torture. They have used the family's calendars to determine when Heuermann was alone in the house while his wife and children were away, comparing those dates to when some of his alleged victims went missing. Russell and Shirley Dermond live in a beautiful lakefront property, Lake Oconee, Georgia. The couple is expected at a Kentucky Derby watch party with neighbors, but don’t show up. When the neighbors reach out by phone, the Dermonds don’t answer. Days later, arriving at the Dermond’s home, the neighbor is surprised to find the front door unlocked. The neighbor calls out their names to no reply.   The neighbor looks in the garage to see if the Dermond’s car is there. The neighbor discovers Russell Dermond laying on the garage floor, decapitated.  The neighbor calls 911, racing around the house looking for Shirley Dermond, but she is nowhere to be found.   Investigators begin a neighborhood search and beyond for Shirley Dermond, without success.  The search lasts for 10 days until two fishermen find her body in lake Oconee. Shirley Dermond has been dumped in the lake with cinder blocks tied to her legs. Jeff German, an investigative reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, was found dead outside his home. Days later, police released surveillance footage of a potential suspect wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat, an orange safety shirt, and black pants, seen walking near the scene. Further investigation revealed that German’s reporting had placed him in conflict with elected Public Administrator Robert Telles. Earlier, German had reported that Telles created a toxic work environment and was having an extramarital affair with an employee. These allegations seemingly contributed to Telles losing his re-election bid. Investigators searched Telles’ home, towing a red SUV and discovering shoes with apparent blood on them. A straw hat matching the one in the video was also found. Both items had been cut up in an attempt to destroy evidence, but DNA under German’s fingernails provided police with crucial evidence. Telles was arrested for German’s murder and has now been convicted.
