Our Gut Needs 'ME TIME' Don't You?

Our Gut Needs 'ME TIME' Don't You?

EP 3: S1

Sharing my childhood story about fasting and as promised that in every episode, I will share at least 3 to 5 benefits of fasting.

So, when I was a little girl, about 6 or 7 years old, I remember asking my father, why was he fasting. Now, how did I know that he was fasting? because at that age, I really didn't know the wisdom or anything about fasting.

So coming back to why did I ask this question to my father, I think Because I was hearing that my dad had to break his fast and I don't remember but I assume my mother was also fasting but I saw both of them in the kitchen preparing food.

The conversation about the time, because one breaks the fast at the sunset and so I could feel the subtle urgency of my mother to prep up the food so it was ready.

And here I was all excited as a child to eat and looking forward to delicious food that would be served shortly because I loved food, specially fruits and my mother's exquisite and tasty cooking, which I still love to this day. She is an excellent, mindful cook.

I should say a Food and kitchen scientist who knows the basics and advanced knowledge of food and nutrition. Not only that, of spices and herbs as well.

So more on this later, so let me get back to fasting. By the way, the question must be popping in your head that was I fasting when I was 6 or 7? Many in the US or unaware of the Islamic fasting might not know that fasting is permitted for children after puberty.

Many do keep a fast here and there when they are little because when they see every adult fasting in the house, somehow, and I remember doing this too.

So, there is alot to talk about. So let me give you some benefits as promised in my previous episodes about fasting.

What we must avoid is eating heavy meals, right? I am sure my listeners, followers of this podcast, can relate to it. You must have had heavy meals at times and then how did you feel?" Fasting also enhances how we react, think and carry out tasks. The quality of the food definitely effects us and I will say it again, processed foods and sugars.

Next time you eat rather a very heavy meal and specially if you were observing a dry fast or intermittent fasting Please think about it and pay attention and see what was your experience?

I would encourage to avoid over eating and instead keep some room. And this was also taught to us through Prophet Muhammad , Peace be Upon him, to keep some room and to combine foods sensibly and mindfully.

According to the research The common cause of all diseases is the accumulation of waste and poisonous matter in the body which results from overeating

Fasting is nature's oldest, most effective and yet least expensive method of treating disease.

And this is what I also remember from my childhood that doctors used to ask the patient first what did they had eaten whole day or what are their eating and sleeping habits. And to avoid heavy foods and not to eat too much.

The practice of fasting is one of the most ancient customs. It is followed in almost every religion. The Islamic, the Jewish, the Christian the Buddhists, the Hindus and many others have their periods of strict fasting.

Let us talk about few benefits as promised and before we go.

BENEFITS:

  1. Fasting helps to detox you, your body and depending on how you are fasting, it can detox you spritually and emotionally as well.
  2. It improves your alertness - which as a consequence brings you more mindfulness and strengthens the relationship between your mind and body. So all this talk on mind and body can be easily achieved if we can learn to fast. And that is where you will have to figure out, what kind of fasting do you want to observe? I do the Islamic fasting, which was ordained and prescribed more than 1444 years ago. It is simple for me. More on that later
  3. The best way to loose weight is to fast. Like we don't need to eat to loose weight, don't you think? It also doesn't make sense. Please do leave a comment or two on this point.
  4. Research shows that people who practice some kind of fasting don't need to diet. Fasting is simpler and more doable. However, it depends on you. If you are not familiar with the concept of fasting and have not ever done it then find some fasting expert who knows about fasting. Because some people who in Jewish and Christian tradition, who fast know how to do it for themselves. And Muslims who do the traditional fast , it is easier for them because it has been in their culture and faith from the very beginning and it is practiced fully as it was taught more than 1400 years ago.
  5. Fasting leads to regeneration of the blood as well as the repair and regeneration of the various tissues of the body
  6. You can get away from the mindset that you do not need to feed the body all the time and can give a break, that is a relief, I would say. So, instead of working on digesting the food, your system works to heal the gut wall and your digestive system gets some rest and there is less pressure on your organs, so gives the digestive system, some ME TIME! Don't we all need me time?

Okay, take a deep breath in… relax and say that I will take care of my health and I am fully responsible for my health and will learn and take matters in my hand and take food away from my hand…. What do you think?

Well, till we meet again next week. I wish you a wonderful and healthy week. Take care of your health and stay happy.
