Calf care: Prevention of failure of transfer of passive immunity and 3 other major health threats

Welcome to our new audio article from Ceva Sounds Ruminants. The topic of today is Calf care: Prevention of failure of transfer of passive immunity and 3 other major health threats. A content developed by Brigitte Trezzani.

In this episode, we explore the main health challenges calves face from birth to weaning. It all starts with the prevention of failure of transfer of passive immunity (FTPI), a key factor for calf survival, growth, and long-term productivity. Ensuring a rapid intake of high-quality colostrum is essential to provide the antibodies calves need during their first hours of life. We then look at the main infectious threats that appear over time, including neonatal diarrhea caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites, post-neonatal parasitic infections after three weeks of age, and bovine respiratory disease before weaning. The article emphasizes practical prevention strategies such as hygiene, biosecurity, vaccination, proper housing, nutritional management, and early diagnostic testing, all essential to reducing morbidity and mortality while supporting optimal herd performance.
