On the morning of February 24, 2023, a man walked into a quiet Virginia home believing he was meeting someone for a consensual encounter.

Instead, he walked into a carefully constructed trap.

In this episode of Red Flags & Body Bags, Dana and Chloe unravel the disturbing story behind the murders of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan — and the former federal investigator convicted of orchestrating it all, Brendan Banfield.

Prosecutors say Banfield used a fake online identity, a fetish website, and his own live-in au pair — Juliana Peres Magalhães — to lure Ryan to the family home, stage a violent scene, and make it look like a random intruder attack.

But investigators quickly realized something didn’t add up.

With no forced entry, weeks of digital communication, firearms training, and forensic evidence pointing away from self-defense, what initially appeared to be a tragic home invasion began to look like something far darker: a premeditated plot to eliminate a wife and frame a stranger.

This is a story about manipulation, power imbalance, digital deception — and how someone trained to investigate crimes allegedly tried to design the perfect one.
