Your First 5 Years of Retirement Decide Everything

Your First 5 Years of Retirement Decide Everything

Your first 5 retirement years decide everything—retirement planning, withdrawal strategy, taxes, health insurance, spending, purpose, relationships, and the mistakes that derail early retirees. Here are the lessons to get it right.

If you retire in your 50s or early 60s, the first five years aren’t a warm-up. The habits you set, the decisions you lock in, and the systems you build early will compound for decades.

In this episode, I cover 9 crucial lessons:

• Treat withdrawals, taxes, and healthcare as one system • Healthspan matters more than you think (do the “big stuff” early) • Two sequence risks: markets and lifestyle habits • Money is freedom, not a scoreboard (avoid comparison spending) • Your identity will change — plan for it • Purpose beats “permanent vacation” (avoid boredom/regret) • Relationships need active investment (spouse, friends, community) • Test big decisions before locking them in (moves, downsizing, etc.) • Most long-term regrets come from inaction

And the 3 biggest first-five-year mistakes to avoid: • No integrated income plan (withdrawals/taxes/healthcare disconnected) • No spending guardrails (underspend fear or overspend excitement) • No review system (drift takes over—financially and emotionally)
