Burn the Boats, The Call to True Discipleship. 3/01/2026

This sermon challenges us to understand the radical difference between casual Christianity and true discipleship. Drawing from Matthew 28:19 and Luke 9:23, we're confronted with an uncomfortable truth: following Jesus isn't about adding a sprinkle of spirituality to our lives, but about complete death to ourselves. When Jesus told His followers to take up their cross daily, they understood exactly what He meant—a cross was a one-way journey to death. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's sobering words echo through this teaching: when Christ calls us, He bids us come and die. This isn't the end goal we work toward; it's the door we must walk through at the very beginning. The message beautifully illustrates this through the parable of the treasure in the field and the pearl of great price—both of which require the person to sell everything they have. We're called to burn our boats like Cortés did in Veracruz, eliminating any plan B that might tempt us away from full surrender. The transformation God offers isn't a slight improvement but a complete new creation, where we put off our old self and put on our new identity in Christ. This requires immediate obedience, not delayed compliance. When we truly grasp this, we stop deceiving ourselves by being hearers only and become doers of the Word, experiencing the blessing that comes from living out what we've learned.
