Gigawatt Wars: OpenAI's $60 Billion AMD Deal and the End of Nvidia's Chip Monopoly

Gigawatt Wars: OpenAI's $60 Billion AMD Deal and the End of Nvidia's Chip Monopoly

This episode dives into the massive partnership between AMD and OpenAI, a move specifically designed to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the AI chip market.

We explore the details of this five-year agreement, which commits OpenAI to purchasing six gigawatts worth of AMD’s GPUs for its burgeoning AI data centers. This infrastructure bolster is crucial for meeting the growing computational demands required for applications such as ChatGPT.

The deal is expected to deliver “tens of billions of dollars in revenue” for AMD. Following the announcement, the company’s stock price increased by 24 percent in pre-market trading. Deployment is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, starting with a gigawatt deployment of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs.

AMD CEO Lisa Su expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that it brings the best of both companies together to enable the world’s most ambitious AI buildout and advance the entire AI ecosystem. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed this sentiment, calling it a major step toward building the compute capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential, noting that AMD’s leadership will accelerate progress.

We also analyze the strategic positioning of this agreement relative to OpenAI's existing plans. While OpenAI previously established Nvidia as a “preferred strategic compute and networking partner,” AMD is defined as a “core strategic compute partner”. Furthermore, the deal offers a significant incentive: OpenAI has the option to receive up to 160 million AMD shares—approximately a ten percent stake—at a cent per share, dependent on achieving specific milestones.

Join us as we discuss how this critical partnership is disrupting the semiconductor landscape and shaping the future of AI infrastructure.
