Your Net Worth is the Wrong Number

Your Net Worth is the Wrong Number

Early retirement planning is not just about net worth. In this episode, I break down the retirement number that matters more, plus ACA health insurance, taxes, spending, and sequence risk.

Most people ask, “How much net worth do I need to retire?” But that question can be misleading.

In this episode, I explain why the more important question is this: How much does your portfolio need to support each year?

Using simple examples, I show why two households with similar net worth can be in very different positions for retirement depending on:

  • spending
  • ACA health insurance costs before Medicare
  • taxes and MAGI
  • account structure
  • withdrawal flexibility
  • sequence of returns risk

If you’re planning for early retirement, trying to figure out how much you need to retire, or wondering whether your portfolio can really support your lifestyle, this episode will help you think about retirement planning the right way.

I also share the 5 key numbers I believe matter most in retirement planning:

  1. Annual spending
  2. Health insurance costs
  3. Taxes
  4. Bridge years before Medicare and Social Security
  5. The amount your portfolio needs to cover each year
