"Two young girls gunned down on a beautiful June day" is a headline we, Americans, are all too familiar with. However, most people would be shocked to discover that the brutal slayings occurred along a tree-lined dirt road in America's heartland. "That type of violence doesn't happen here," or "We moved to the country to get away from this type of thing," is what we often hear after such a violent act occurs. And indeed, those were the very emotions that locals expressed in June of 2008, when eleven-year-old Skyla Jade Whitaker and her best friend, thirteen-year-old Taylor Dawn Paschal-Placker, were shot thirteen times while walking home from the creek on a beautiful June afternoon.Police would work on solving the young girl's murder for three years without any luck.
