Sarjamurhaaja Dennis Rader aloitti murhiensa sarjan murhaamalla neljä Oteron perheen jäsentä. Kun eräs toinen mies tunnusti murhat, Rader kirjoitti poliisille yksityiskohtaisen selostuksen rikoksesta varmistaakseen, ettei kukaan muu voisi ottaa “kunniaa” hänen teostaan. Vuosien ajan Rader lähetti poliisille ja medialle kirjeitä, runoja, piirroksia ja jopa ehdotuksia siitä, millä nimellä häntä voitaisiin kutsua. Sitten murhat ja kirjeet loppuivat, ja monet olettivat BTK:n olevan joko kuollut tai vankilassa. Kun Rader vuonna 2004 luki sanomalehtiartikkelin, jossa hänen kerrottiin olevan jäämässä unohduksiin, hän tarttui jälleen kirjoituskoneeseensa ja lähetti medialle sarjan yksityiskohtaisia tunnustuksia, sana-arvoituksia ja uhkauksia.
