An Open Letter to Kendra: You’re Allowed to Leave

An Open Letter to Kendra: You’re Allowed to Leave

Kendra Duggar described it herself on a recorded call. The whole family has departments. Some working on the kids. Some working on her. Some working on the attorney. Some working on the business. She said it like it meant they loved her. What it actually describes is an operation designed to keep her on a path — and that path leads away from her children, not toward them.

On a Monday call, she broke. Cried to Joseph that the kids had to be her priority. That she wasn’t well. That she could barely function. The people around her — the Duggars she called her coaches — were telling her to take care of herself. For one conversation, Kendra sounded like a mother whose instincts were cutting through the noise. Then the week filled up. ATV rides. Worship music. Psalms from Joseph’s cell. Sisters-in-law rotating through. Every silence replaced with scripture and activity and reassurance. And the crying mother from Monday was gone.

This monologue is Tony Brueski’s open letter to Kendra — not an indictment, but a guide. It walks through the practical steps of getting out: finding an attorney with no family ties, showing the court and DCFS she’s serious about reunification, accessing mental health care that doesn’t route through the system keeping her in place. It lays out what Jill, Jinger, and Amy built financially after leaving — and what Kendra’s own story could be worth if she told it on her terms, in her voice, for the thousands of women who have never heard someone like them say those words: I got out.

The Monday version of Kendra had it right. The kids come first. She’s allowed to believe that.
