On June 27, 2025, a horrifying case unfolded in Tamil Nadu that sent shockwaves across the country. Ajith Kumar, a 27-year-old temple security guard from Madapuram village in Sivaganga district, was taken into police custody after being accused of gold theft by a woman named J P Nikitha. What followed next wasn’t just a simple investigation — it turned into a chilling case of custodial torture and murder.

Ajith was allegedly detained, taken to multiple undisclosed locations, brutally beaten, and subjected to inhumane torture — including being forced to inhale chilli water and ganja smoke. On June 28, he was declared dead at a private hospital. But by then, it was too late. Post-mortem reports revealed 44 injury marks, including severe internal bleeding and blunt force trauma, making it clear this wasn’t just a death — it was systematic custodial violence.

The case gained national attention when a disturbing video of Ajith being beaten by police officers surfaced online. Public outrage erupted across Tamil Nadu, especially in Sivaganga and Madurai. The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court stepped in, confirming it as a case of custodial death and ordered a CBI investigation. Five police officers were arrested, including DSP N. Shanmugasundaram. Sivaganga SP Ashish Rawat was sent on compulsory wait. Six officers were suspended. The case has now been officially handed over to the CBI, and their detailed report is expected by August 20, 2025.
