Pet Loss Grief and Mental Health: The Psychology of the Human–Animal Bond

Pet Loss Grief and Mental Health: The Psychology of the Human–Animal Bond

This episode explores the mental health impact of pet loss grief through a personal and reflective story of losing my 11-year-old golden retriever after a six-month journey with lymphoma. I share the emotional experience of anticipatory grief, difficult treatment decisions, and the compassionate choice of euthanasia.

Pet bereavement is a profound but often overlooked form of grief. The human–animal bond can be deeply significant, and the loss of a companion animal may affect emotional well-being, sleep, daily routines, and overall mental health. This episode examines the psychology of grief, emotional adjustment, and the process of acceptance and meaning-making after loss.

From a young age, I felt a strong sensitivity toward animal suffering, although I did not fully understand its meaning at the time. The life and loss of my dog awakened a deeper awareness of purpose and compassion.

That personal transformation led me to reflect on animal welfare beyond my own home, particularly in Mongolia. Despite severe winters and a large population of stray dogs and cats, Mongolia often receives limited attention from international organizations due to its small population of about 3.5 million people. This episode explores how personal grief can expand into broader ethical awareness and social responsibility.

Inspired in part by public conversations about grief, including those by Anderson Cooper and the All There Is project, this discussion approaches loss from both psychological and philosophical perspectives.

Grief is not only an experience of loss. It can also become a turning point toward deeper awareness, compassion, and purpose.
