Oh Canada! A Trade Comedy of Errors

Join us as we dive into the latest head-scratching trade drama with our neighbor to the North! Just a week after President Trump and Mark Carney were "palling around together as if they were buddies", Trump abruptly announced the US is "ending trade talks with Canada, effective immediately" and "threatening new tariffs" via a social media post.

Why the sudden freeze? It seems the President has "for a long time been fixated on dairy farmers in Canada", believing "the Canadian government is protecting a relatively small number of dairy farmers in Canada by putting tariffs and quotas" on US dairy. He thinks these farmers are "ripping off American dairy farmers". And just when you thought that was all, a "new element of digital taxes" from Canada entered the chat, causing the President to declare they're "back to square one again".

We'll explore the bewildering timing – why "muddy it up" when Trump had "good news" from a Supreme Court win and was "going to announce a deal with China," our "biggest trading partner"? He didn't even mention a "snafu with Canada" during a nearly hour-long press availability just before his social media announcement. We'll also look at how the market reacted, initially enthusiastic about China progress but then the Dow dropping after this "new thing" with Canada.
