Soviet Authority is Organized Civil War: The Founding Documents of the Soviet Union

Constitutions are often thought of as dry legal documents; mere collections of articles, clauses, and technical language that seem far removed from the drama of history; however, in revolutionary times, constitutions are declarations of political intent, blueprints for a new society, and statements about who holds power and why.

This is the case of the first two revolutionary constitutions adopted by the Soviet state.

In this episode, hosts Matthew and Jason explore the Constitution of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic of 1918 and the Constitution of the Soviet Union of 1922-24. These documents sought not simply to organize government, but to redefine the relationship between the state, the working class, the peasantry, and the many nationalities of the former Russian Empire.

We'll examine how the 1918 Constitution enshrined the principle of the dictatorship of the proletariat, established the soviets as the foundation of political authority, and reflected the extraordinary circumstances of the Civil War. We'll then turn to the formation of the Soviet Union itself and the 1924 Constitution, which transformed a revolutionary republic into a multinational socialist federation, defining the respective powers of the Union and its constituent republics while attempting to balance central authority with national autonomy.

Along the way, we'll ask some important questions. Were these constitutions merely symbolic, or did they meaningfully shape Soviet political life? How did they reflect Bolshevik ideas about democracy, class, and state power? And what can they tell us about the ambitions and the challenges of building the world's first socialist state?

Whether you're interested in constitutional history, political theory, or the early years of the Soviet experiment, these documents provide a fascinating window into the aspirations of a revolution that sought not just to replace one government with another, but to create an entirely new kind of society.

So join us as we explore the first constitutional foundations of Soviet power, from the revolutionary ideals of 1918 to the creation of the Union itself in 1924.
