Not by Politics Alone: Social Life, Law, Religion and Education in the Early USSR

Not by Politics Alone: Social Life, Law, Religion and Education in the Early USSR

Millions of people who lived through the founding years of the Soviet Union experienced the profound changes brought about by momentous events in history, but beyond the battlefields and debating halls of the Russian Revolution and Civil War, these changes were wrought in the classrooms, courtrooms, workplaces, homes, and places of worship of average Soviet citizens.

In this episode, your host Jason explores social life, law, religion, and education in the early USSR. He will examine how the new Soviet government attempted to build a society based on socialist principles, introducing sweeping legal reforms, expanding access to education, promoting literacy, and redefining the relationship between the individual, the family, and the state. We'll also look at the challenges of implementing these ambitious reforms in a country devastated by war, economic hardship, and widespread illiteracy.

Finally, we'll ask a broader question: what did it mean to create a new socialist society? The early Soviet years were a period of extraordinary experimentation, marked by bold reforms, fierce debates, practical compromises, and unintended consequences. Some initiatives proved remarkably successful, others encountered significant obstacles, but together they reveal the scale of the Bolsheviks' ambition, not merely to change who governed Russia, but to reshape how people learned, worked, believed, formed families, and understood their place in society.

Join us as we step beyond the familiar political narratives and explore everyday life in the early Soviet Union. It's a story of idealism and innovation, conflict and adaptation, and of a society attempting one of the most ambitious social transformations in modern history.
