Fayaz Nawabi | Building Civic Power and Passing California’s Proposition 50

Imam and community organizer Fayaz Nawabi joins Kay Brown to discuss civic engagement, faith, and the urgent fight for democracy in California on this episode of Hot Spots. A San Diego native and graduate of San Diego State University, Nawabi has spent two decades empowering underrepresented communities through political organizing and leadership. As the founder of For the People Action, he works to mobilize Black, African, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian voters in support of progressive candidates and policies. In this episode, he breaks down the importance of Proposition 50, California’s response to nationwide election manipulation efforts, and highlights how communities of color can reclaim influence at the ballot box. Nawabi also shares insights on confronting Christian nationalism, ensuring voter safety, and the moral call for political participation rooted in faith and justice.

Takeaways:

  • Civic engagement is key to community empowerment and representation.
  • Proposition 50 aims to protect democracy and fair elections in California.
  • For the People Action mobilizes marginalized communities to support people-first candidates.
  • Political involvement builds accountability between voters and elected officials.
  • Christian nationalism poses real threats to religious freedom and inclusion.
  • The current federal administration’s actions harm Muslim and minority communities through funding discrimination.
  • Voter suppression tactics target Black and Brown communities across the country.
  • Showing up, organizing, and voting remain the strongest tools of resistance.
