Leonarda Cianciulli

Leonarda Cianciulli

This week on Menopause is Murder, Marguerite takes Angela—and the rest of y’all—straight to wartime Italy for one of the most unsettling recipes in true crime history.

Meet Leonarda Cianciulli: devoted mother, neighborhood fortune teller… and the woman infamously known as the “Soap-Maker of Correggio.” Between 1939 and 1940, in the quiet town of Correggio, Leonarda claimed she was simply protecting her beloved son from a deadly wartime curse. Her solution? Human sacrifice. Her method? Let’s just say it involved a cauldron… and a very disturbing understanding of chemistry.

Driven by superstition, trauma, and an obsessive love for her child, Leonarda lured unsuspecting women into her home, murdered them, and turned their remains into soap and tea cakes—yes, actual tea cakes—that she reportedly served to neighbors.

Grab your espresso and maybe skip dessert—because this episode proves that sometimes the most terrifying things aren’t hiding in the shadows… they’re stirring the pot in the kitchen.

And darling, in this house, we always remember: some women stress-bake.
