The Free Disciple

In the beginning, God made us free. But freedom does not mean we can do what ever we want to do. God put Adam in the Garden of Eden and told him he was free to eat from any of the trees in the garden; any tree but the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. That raises a question, and this question is a frequently asked one by people who profess to be longstanding followers of Jesus and by people who are just learning about the Bible for the first time. “Why would God put the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden if it would lead to Adam’s fall? God is all knowing, so He knew this would happen. Was this whole thing a set up?” Other than these two truths: One, God is sovereign, and two, He does not tempt people to do evil— in fact James 1:13 says, “When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone,” this is a great place to just tell you a great biblical principle, one that every Lite Disciple should know very well. Here it is: I don’t know! And no one else really knows why God put this tree in His garden— despite how eloquently they may convince you of their wisdom, because God did not give us a single verse for why that tree was there.
