When I think of experiencing the real Portugal, the first thing that comes to mind is Festa de São João. It’s a tradition you simply can’t compare to anything else. That’s when everything best about Portugal comes together - during Santos Populares, the festivals celebrating the patron saints of different cities. The biggest ones are Santo António in Lisbon, São João in Porto and São Pedro in fishing towns, but Santos Populares are celebrated in many other places too. If I had to recommend just one time of the year to visit Portugal, it would be this. You won’t regret it.
