Episode 7: MK Ultra — The CIA's Secret Mind Control Programme

MKUltra is not a conspiracy theory. It is a confirmed, documented, congressional-investigation-verified CIA programme that subjected thousands of unwitting American and Canadian citizens to behavioural modification experiments including the administration of LSD without consent, sensory deprivation, hypnosis, electroconvulsive therapy, sexual abuse, and psychological torture. It ran from 1953 to 1973. The CIA director ordered the destruction of most of its files in 1973. The programme was only discovered because a set of documents survived in a financial records building that was overlooked in the destruction order.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine MKUltra in full — what was confirmed by the Church Committee investigations of 1975, the specific documented experiments, the victims who were never compensated, and the extraordinary figures at the centre of the programme including Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA's "Black Sorcerer" who directed the research.

We examine the Frank Olson case — the CIA scientist who was dosed with LSD without his knowledge and died when he fell from a New York hotel window nine days later. His death was ruled a suicide. His family had his body exhumed in 1994 and found evidence of a blow to the head before the fall. His son Eric has spent decades arguing that his father was murdered because he had threatened to expose the programme.

We examine what MKUltra tells us about the limits of government authority and the specific conspiracy theories it has generated about its continuation — the claims that the programme never truly ended, that its techniques were adapted into post-9/11 interrogation methods, and why this confirmed government programme remains one of the most searched intelligence topics in the world.
