Zombie Ant Fungus: Mind Control, Chemical Warfare, and Medical Promise

Paleontologists digging a 48-million-year-old fossil in Germany's Messel Pit found not a bone, but a leaf bearing distinct dumbbell-shaped bite marks. Those marks were not made by a hungry insect. The fungus is highly host-specific, with dozens of species each calibrated to one ant species, breaching the exoskeleton using enzymes like chitinase, lipase, and protease.
It steers the ant to roughly 26 centimeters off the ground, where temperature and 94 to 95 percent humidity are perfect, then forces a death grip synchronized to solar noon.
The grip is physical, with fungal cells replacing jaw-muscle function by draining leucine and destroying the sarcoplasmic reticulum, locking the jaw permanently.
Ant colonies survive through social immunity, grooming and banishing the infected, while an anti-zombie hyperparasite limits the fungus to only 6 to 7 percent viable spores.
The fungus inspired The Last of Us, and its compounds, including naphthoquinone derivatives and polyketides, show promise against malaria, cancer, tuberculosis, and more.
