The persistence of the vaccines-autism link in public belief has multiple roots. The first is the timing phenomenon: autism symptoms typically become apparent to parents in the second year of a child's life, which coincides with the MMR vaccination schedule. The correlation — child receives vaccine, child is subsequently diagnosed with autism — feels causally significant to parents experiencing it, regardless of whether it reflects a real causal relationship. This is not stupidity or paranoia. It is a natural human cognitive response to sequence.

The second is the pharmaceutical industry's actual track record. The companies that manufacture vaccines are the same companies that produced the opioid epidemic, that concealed safety data on antidepressants, that paid billions in fines for marketing drugs for unapproved uses, and whose regulatory relationships have been the subject of sustained academic and journalistic criticism.
