Why Is Anna Kepner's Accused Killer Living With Two Other Minors?

Why Is Anna Kepner's Accused Killer Living With Two Other Minors?

Under the conditions of his release, Timothy Hudson is not supposed to be alone with anyone underage. And yet two minors reportedly live in the very home where he's been placed. Prosecutors raised exactly that alarm in open court. The judge acknowledged that an adult facing these charges would almost certainly be behind bars — called this case a "different animal" — and still let Hudson walk free on GPS monitoring. This look back examines why.

Hudson faces first-degree murder and an additional serious federal charge in the death of his eighteen-year-old stepsister Anna Kepner aboard the Carnival Horizon. He's sixteen. Because the case is in federal court — the crime occurred in international waters — the intersection of his age and the severity of the charges creates a procedural situation federal judges rarely face. The detention hearing ended without a ruling, and Hudson left the courthouse.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott adds the family dimension. Timothy's biological mother, who is married to Anna's father, expelled him from the household immediately after Anna's death. Court filings allege she told his biological father she couldn't jeopardize her marriage to help her own son. Scott examines what that rejection does to a teenager already in crisis — someone facing life in prison whose parent has publicly chosen the victim's family over him — and the nine-year-old sibling caught between both sides of a family that has fractured beyond repair. Hudson has pleaded not guilty. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.
