Episode 58 Old World Tours: Rockford, Illinois

Episode 58 Old World Tours: Rockford, Illinois

Join us as we explore the hidden architectural gems and historical structures of Rockford, Illinois, uncovering the stories behind abandoned theaters, churches, and factories, and reflecting on the decline of craftsmanship and ambition in modern construction.

We are taking the Old World Tour to Rockford, Illinois — one of the best remaining hidden gems for seeing late 1800s and early 1900s architecture still standing in the Midwest.

Rockford went from just over 13,000 people in 1880 to over 45,000 by 1910. In that short window, the city built an impressive number of large, ornate churches, theaters, and institutional buildings that still dominate the skyline today. We’re going to look at several of them up close, including First Lutheran Church and Court Street United Methodist, along with the fact that Rockford had at least 10 to 15 churches of this same scale going up during that period.

We’re also diving into the long-abandoned Midway Theater, one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking buildings still standing in the city. We’ll stop by Tinker Swiss Cottage and talk about some strange details around the foundation and the cliff it sits on. Plus we’re going underground to discuss the real engineering behind Rockford’s old steam tunnel systems that connected factories across the city. And we’ll compare the old National Guard Armory to the new one built in the 1990s to see just how far the quality and ambition have fallen in such a short amount of time.

Rockford still has a surprising amount of the old world visible if you know where to look. But like so many other cities, we’re watching these buildings slowly decay because we no longer have the skills or the will to maintain them.

Come walk through Rockford’s hidden past with me.
