What Did The FBI Find On The Carnival Horizon After Anna Kepner Was Killed?

The crime scene was a cruise ship. It sailed into port the morning after Anna Kepner was found dead. Thousands of passengers disembarked. The vessel was cleaned and prepared for its next voyage. And somewhere in that window, FBI investigators had to recover everything they could from a stateroom, a ship's surveillance system, and a population that was about to scatter across the country. This look back, with retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, examines what they found — and what building a case at sea actually looks like.

Unsealed court records describe security footage tracking Timothy Hudson's movements the night Anna died. A cellular phone that ended up smashed in a trash bin. DNA testing that points in one direction. Anna was found concealed beneath a bed — wrapped in a blanket, covered with life jackets, cause of death mechanical asphyxiation — in the stateroom she shared with her sixteen-year-old stepbrother. Ship surveillance reportedly shows one person entering and exiting.

Coffindaffer reads the evidence from the perspective of someone who spent a career handing cases to prosecutors — and gives her honest assessment of watching a defendant facing charges this serious get sent home on GPS monitoring after the judge acknowledged an adult would be detained. Hudson is living with a relative in a home that reportedly includes two other minors, despite release conditions prohibiting unsupervised contact with anyone underage. He faces first-degree murder and an additional serious federal charge. He has pleaded not guilty. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.
