Siders 16 Kids: Officials Were Told To Stay Quiet

The attorney general called it pure evil. The sheriff said livestock lived better. A judge just ordered both of them — along with the prosecutor, the clerk, and all defense counsel — to stop talking about the Siders case publicly.

The gag order was requested by Gary Siders Junior's attorney after officials described what they found inside a Hamden, Ohio, home: sixteen children in a twelve-by-twelve-foot room, covered in filth, some barely able to speak. The stated purpose is protecting the jury pool in a county of about twelve thousand people. The practical effect is shutting down the public accountability conversation at the exact moment Ohio legislators started demanding answers.

Court records from 2021 show Gallia County knew six Siders children had disappeared from school — and closed the file when the family couldn't be found. Gary Senior walked free on a recognizance bond because the county couldn't afford to hold him. Ohio approved a million dollars in emergency foster care funding. Every one of these facts was disclosed at a public press conference. Under the gag order, those press conferences cannot happen again. The officials who found those children are now the ones ordered to be quiet. The systems that never went looking have not been asked to say a word.
