One to two women out of every thousand who give birth will experience postpartum psychosis. It is classified as a psychiatric emergency. It involves hallucinations, delusions, mania, paranoia, and command voices that the person experiencing them cannot distinguish from reality. And there is no routine screening for it in postnatal care anywhere in the United States.

Lindsay Clancy described symptoms to her providers that her civil lawsuit now alleges were auditory hallucinations — not the intrusive thoughts her doctors treated them as. That distinction is the difference between an anxiety diagnosis and immediate hospitalization. Nobody asked the follow-up question. Nobody gave her the language to identify what was happening inside her own head. And she was a labor and delivery nurse — a medical professional who had spent her career helping mothers.

The nurse practitioner allegedly never followed up.

Patrick Clancy will testify for Lindsay's defense. He has asked the public to forgive his wife and filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her medical providers.
