BPD and Anxiety Pt 2: Rumination, Avoidance, and Learning to Trust Yourself (The BPD Bunch S7)

Have you ever felt like your anxiety was preparing you for the worst, only to realize it was keeping you stuck? In Part 2 of our conversation about BPD and anxiety, Xannie, Carys, Katja, Céline, and Dan share the strategies that genuinely helped them manage anxiety over time. From panic attacks and rumination to avoidance, self-doubt, and fear of difficult conversations, they talk honestly about what made the biggest difference in their recovery. In this episode:* BPD and anxiety* Rumination and overthinking* Avoidance and exposure* Panic attacks and physical anxiety symptoms* Self-soothing and distress tolerance* Coping ahead and journaling* Mindfulness and acceptance* Building confidence through practiceIf you’ve ever felt like anxiety was making your world smaller, we hope this conversation reminds you that change is possible, even if it happens one small step at a time. This season, we’re discussing BPD through the lens of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). To meet criteria for BPD in this model, a person must have difficulties in at least two areas of personality functioning (Criterion A): identity, self direction, empathy, or intimacy, along with four or more pathological personality traits (Criterion B): emotional lability, anxiousness, separation insecurity, and depressivity (which are sub-traits of negative affectivity), impulsivity and risk taking (sub-traits of disinhibition), and hostility (a sub-trait of antagonism). In the first two episodes of the season, Dr. Carla Sharp, Dr. Frank Yeomans, and Dr. Alex Stein explain what the AMPD is, how it changes from the current categorical model, and how the BPD diagnosis is changing.
