Before the swastika, before the SS, before the Nuremberg rallies and the death camps, there was an ideology — and before the ideology, according to a persistent and disturbing strand of historical and conspiratorial research, there was an occult. The claim that the Nazi movement drew deeply from a well of esoteric belief — Aryan mysticism, ancient mythology, the search for supernatural power — is not purely the territory of conspiracy theorists. It is a subject that serious historians have engaged with, argued over, and partially confirmed. The Thule Society, the Ahnenerbe, the SS's expeditions to Tibet — these are documented. What is less documented, and more contested, is the role of the Vril Society: a semi-mythical group of female mediums who, according to some accounts, claimed to channel an ancient energy force from the universe, and whose communications allegedly helped shape the technological and ideological direction of the Third Reich.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Vril Society — separating the documented history of Nazi occultism from the more elaborate claims that have accrued around the Vril concept, and asking what the genuine intersection of mysticism and fascism tells us about how totalitarian ideologies construct their worldview.

The concept of Vril originates with a Victorian novel. Edward Bulwer-Lytton's 1871 science fiction work The Coming Race described a subterranean civilisation of beings who had mastered a universal life force called Vril — an energy that powered their technology, extended their lifespan, and gave them near-supernatural abilities. The novel was enormously popular and, unusually for fiction, was taken by certain readers as a literal account of hidden reality. By the early twentieth century, Vril had entered the vocabulary of European occultism, appearing in the writings of Helena Blavatsky's Theosophical movement and in the ideology of various esoteric groups that emerged in Weimar Germany.

The claim that a specific Vril Society existed as an organised group, composed of female mediums who channelled alien or ancient intelligences and transmitted this knowledge to early Nazi leaders, rests primarily on post-war sources of questionable reliability. The most cited account comes from a 1960 book by Jacques Bergier and Louis Pauwels, The Morning of the Magicians, which presented a dramatic version of pre-Nazi occultism that subsequent historians have found difficult to verify from primary sources. The Vril Society as described — with its Aryan goddess figures, its channelled communications, its direct influence on Himmler and Hitler — may be more literary construction than documented history.
