Burnout vs. Boreout: Which One Is Destroying You?

Burnout vs. Boreout: Which One Is Destroying You?

Burnout asks: “How much more can I take?”
Boreout asks: “Is there anything here worth giving myself to?”

We’ve spent years talking about burnout: stress, exhaustion, overwork, impossible deadlines, and the pressure to constantly perform. But there is another, quieter problem hiding on the opposite side of the spectrum: boreout.

Boreout describes the experience of being chronically underchallenged, disengaged, unstimulated, and disconnected from meaningful work. And while the term is relatively new, scientific research into job boredom, workplace disengagement, underload, and burnout is revealing something fascinating: having too little meaningful work can affect motivation, well-being, performance, and even our sense of personal growth.

In this episode, we explore the relationship between boreout and burnout, and ask a deeper question: what happens when your job doesn't challenge the person you could become?

We’ll connect boreout to flow, personal development, motivation, identity, productivity, AI, the attention economy, and the psychology of meaningful work. Because perhaps the problem isn't always that we're working too much.

Perhaps sometimes we're simply not being challenged enough.
