A School in Pennsylvania Buried a Time Capsule in 1976, They’ve Finally Opened It 50 Years Later | A Woman Battling Incurable Cancer Set Her Sights on Everest, and Made It to the Top

In today's uplifting news, a Pennsylvania elementary school finally opened a time capsule that had been buried for fifty years. Claysville Elementary School in Claysville, PA, buried the capsule in 1976, and students and teachers gathered in the school auditorium to see what had been hidden away for half a century. Some students guessed correctly what would be inside, including money and old pencils. A former fourth-grade teacher who had taught at the school when the capsule was buried recalled placing a felt eraser and pieces of chalk inside. When the capsule was opened, it revealed Bicentennial coins, a two-dollar bill, photographs, newspapers, stamps, classroom supplies, and a congratulatory letter written to the students by then President Gerald Ford. A manual calculator from a math classroom was also inside, a device many of today's students had never seen before. To mark the occasion, the current students and teachers created a new time capsule to be buried and opened in 2076, continuing the tradition for the next generation.

A woman from the U.K. became the first female stage 4 cancer patient to climb Mount Everest, completing the climb for the second time in her life. The 50 year old exercise psychologist was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 breast cancer two years ago and has undergone radiotherapy, liver surgery, and a double mastectomy. She trained for an entire year to prepare for the climb, which she first completed over two decades earlier. Upon reaching the summit, she encouraged others facing cancer to keep taking steps forward no matter how difficult the journey. The coldest nights on the mountain proved to be the hardest part of the climb, as her body temperature dropped while she rested in her tent. She raised more than $100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support during the expedition and also gathered research on how low oxygen levels affected her cancer markers, hoping her data could benefit future patients and doctors. She has also completed the Everest Marathon and climbed Mount Aconcagua, Elbrus, and Kilimanjaro, and she hopes her climb inspires others to believe they can accomplish big things despite their diagnoses.
