Lindsay Clancy Trial: Autopsy Testimony Confirms Callan's Cause of Death as Pediatrician Defends Her

The medical examiner opened today's testimony in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She's pleaded not guilty, with attorney Kevin Reddington arguing an insanity defense built on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

Dr. Kimberley Springer walked the courtroom through the autopsy of the youngest victim, Callan. Cause of death: complications from mechanical asphyxiation, strangulation by ligature. There's no softening that, and the prosecution didn't try to.

What followed complicated the picture rather than simplifying it. Pediatrician Dr. Lindsay Rosshart testified she'd examined all three children and never saw signs of postpartum depression in Clancy. Under cross-examination, she went on record saying Clancy was a good mom. That's the kind of testimony that doesn't fit neatly into either side's narrative, and it's exactly why the defense wanted it in front of the jury.

A preschool teacher from Learning Sprouts, Susan Fraone, rounded out the day with a smaller detail — drop-offs had been difficult for Dawson. It's a minor moment in a trial full of much larger ones, but the defense may lean on it as evidence something was off in the household before anyone recognized how badly.

Prosecutors are still expected to argue Clancy understood what she was doing that day. After the killings, she allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court.
