Murder In Moscow: The Goncalves Family And The 20/20 Interview From 2022

Kristi and Steve Goncalves, the parents of 21-year-old Kaylee Goncalves, had pleaded for answers one month after their daughter, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were stabbed to death inside an off-campus home near the University of Idaho. With no suspect publicly identified at the time, Kristi Goncalves had questioned who the killer was and where that person had gone. She believed the attacker had entered the house methodically, carried out the killings quickly and quietly, and escaped without being detected. Many crucial details had remained unexplained, including the motive, how two roommates on the ground floor survived and whether Kaylee’s dog, Murphy, had reacted while the attack was taking place

The Goncalves family had also grown frustrated by the limited information investigators released, particularly regarding possible DNA evidence and a white Hyundai Elantra seen near the house around the time of the murders. Their attorney, Shannon Gray, had said the lack of information pushed grieving parents deeper into speculation, although the family still hoped police were following the correct investigative path. Moscow police had defended their secrecy by saying they possessed significant information but needed to protect the case and secure not only an arrest but a conviction. Steve Goncalves had urged local residents to submit surveillance footage before recordings were erased, while the families of Kaylee and Madison prepared a joint celebration of life intended to focus on the close friends’ happy and positive lives.
