Virginia Assault Weapons Ban ON HOLD Until SCOTUS Rules in 2027

Virginia Assault Weapons Ban ON HOLD Until SCOTUS Rules in 2027

Just a few months ago Democrats in Richmond were celebrating. They passed their assault weapons ban, told Virginians the July 1 deadline was locked in, and acted like the debate was over. Fast forward one month and the tone has completely shifted. Attorney General Jay Jones is now asking courts to keep the ban blocked until at least 2027 while the U.S. Supreme Court decides similar cases from Illinois and Connecticut.

In this Virginia Insider breakdown, Uriah Kiser walks through the latest court orders, the statewide injunction that started in Washington County, the scramble by gun shops to restock shelves, and the sudden caution coming from the same lawmakers who spent political capital pushing the ban. We also cover why some retailers are still holding inventory low despite the legal pause, and what this means for law-abiding Virginia gun owners who were told they would become criminals overnight.

Virginia’s so-called assault firearms ban targeted semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns capable of holding more than 15 rounds. It was met with immediate lawsuits in multiple counties. The preliminary injunction now covers the entire state. Both sides—including the Attorney General’s office—have agreed to wait for the Supreme Court’s next term. The NRA called the pause a clear win against what they labeled an “insane, radical gun grab.”

This is not the end of the fight. It is a major pause that exposes how quickly the political certainty around the ban collapsed once real courts got involved. Stay locked in as more develops on Virginia gun rights, Second Amendment cases, and the General Assembly’s next moves.
