On September 6th, 2018, the National Solar Observatory at Sunspot, New Mexico was abruptly evacuated and closed. The FBI arrived. The local post office was also shut. Employees were given no explanation. Local law enforcement was not told what was happening. The closure lasted ten days. When the observatory reopened, the official explanation was provided: the facility had been closed due to an ongoing criminal investigation into a janitor who had been using the observatory's internet connection to access child sexual abuse material on his computer. The janitor was subsequently charged and later pleaded guilty. The case was closed. And for many people, that explanation — however specific its details — did not account for the manner of the closure: the FBI presence, the post office shutdown, the communication blackout, and the refusal to inform local authorities of the reason.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Sunspot Observatory closure of 2018 — what happened, what the official explanation says, what alternative theories proposed, and what the episode tells us about the gap between institutional behaviour and public trust.

The alternative theories that circulated during the ten-day closure were varied and dramatic. The most widely shared suggested that the observatory had detected something on the sun — a solar anomaly, an unusual object, or evidence of an incoming event — that authorities did not want made public. The timing, in the days before and after, coincided with unusual solar activity that various monitors had recorded. Webcam footage from the observatory's external cameras had been taken offline along with the facility itself, which struck many observers as excessive if the only concern was a criminal investigation. Several observatories around the world were reportedly taken offline around the same period, though this connection was disputed by observers who noted that the closures occurred for different reasons.

The official explanation, when it came, was detailed enough to be credible on its face: a specific individual, a specific crime, a specific federal investigation. The reasons for FBI involvement in what was effectively a facilities matter — rather than local law enforcement — relate to the federal ownership of the network infrastructure involved and the severity of the charges. The post office closure was attributed to its proximity and the nature of the operation. The communication blackout was attributed to safety concerns during the operation.

What made the Sunspot case resonate is not that the official explanation is necessarily wrong, but that the manner of the closure was entirely disproportionate to its stated cause.
