PHANTASYMIX 61: Auntie Flo

Auntie Flo is always looking for exciting new frequencies, which is why he remains one of the most unique DJs and producers of the last two decades. Otherwise known as Brian D’Souza, his journey as a DJ, producer, radio host and live performer has carried him on strange winds, away from the club and into the earth. As the founder of the series ‘Plants Can Dance (and Mushrooms Sing)’ he has most recently investigated the unique funk of fungi, finding a community of folks converting the electronic signals transmitted by plants into sound and music. They call it ‘biosonicification’, and these compositions are now collected on a Plants Can Dance compilation, curated by D’Souza and featuring leading practitioners from across the world. As an old pal of Phantasy, we knew an ‘ambient’ mix from our favourite Auntie would still have a kick. And as expected, D’Souza’s contribution to the series offers a delicate, rhythmic bridge between his earth-bound ambience and decades as a much respected DJ. Featuring a diversity of experimentally-minded electronic talents such as Alex Kassian, Sam Goku, Caterina Barbieri, James Holden and Waclaw Zimpel, it throbs with life and new musical discoveries. Strap on your wellies and garden gloves, and you’ll be raindancing until the worms emerge.
