Lindsay Clancy Trial Day 16 | Expert Says She Was Not Criminally Responsible

Day 16 of the Lindsay Clancy trial centered on pivotal testimony from forensic psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel, who told jurors that Lindsay suffered from bipolar disorder with postpartum psychosis and was not criminally responsible when she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan. Zeizel testified that Lindsay could not appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions or conform her behavior to the requirements of the law—directly addressing the legal standard at the heart of her defense.

Jurors also heard more about Lindsay's reported delusions, suicidal behavior and the male voice she says commanded her to kill the children and herself. Outside the jury's presence, former McLean Hospital social worker Emily Thorndike was questioned as a potential defense witness, but Judge William Sullivan ultimately ruled that she would not be permitted to testify before the jury because of the limited relevance of her testimony.

The day then ended unexpectedly. After lunch, Judge Sullivan dismissed the jury because of an “unforeseen circumstance,” telling jurors the situation was something the court had not anticipated and instructing them not to speculate or hold the interruption against either side. No official explanation for the early adjournment was disclosed.
