The Complete Philosophy of Spinoza for Sleep

The Complete Philosophy of Spinoza for Sleep

In the quiet stillness before sleep, this calm philosophy episode explores the complete philosophy of Baruch Spinoza and the serene peace of belonging. Among the most tranquil of all thinkers, Spinoza was a quiet man who ground lenses by day and saw, in his philosophy, one vast and unbroken whole of which we are each a small and belonging part. Tonight, beneath a wide and gentle night sky, we rest within that single, calm vision of reality.

Many of us carry a quiet sense of feeling separate, alone, or adrift, and long to feel that we belong to something larger. Spinoza offered a deeply soothing answer. All of existence, he saw, is one infinite whole, which he called God, or Nature, and nothing is truly separate from it, no more than a wave is separate from the ocean. The episode moves gently through the great pillars of his thought: the understanding that frees us from being ruled by our feelings, the calm that comes from flowing with the order of things rather than fighting it, the wide view from which our small troubles soften, and the deep blessedness of a serene love of the whole.

By starlight and the sense of one unbroken reality, the lonely, separate self is gently dissolved into the greater unity. You do not have to feel alone or adrift tonight. You are part of one vast and unbroken whole, held within it, belonging completely, as you drift gently into sleep.
