The Lost Franklin Expedition: The Arctic Disaster That Became a Horror Story

The Lost Franklin Expedition: The Arctic Disaster That Became a Horror Story

In 1845, Sir John Franklin led one of the Royal Navy’s best-equipped Arctic expeditions into the Canadian North. His two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, carried 129 officers and men, reinforced hulls, steam engines, heating systems, scientific instruments, and provisions intended to last for years. Their task was to complete the Northwest Passage. None of them returned.

For years, the expedition left almost no confirmed trace. Then searchers found three graves on Beechey Island, an abandoned boat mounted on a sledge, scattered possessions, and a handwritten message reporting that Franklin had died, that twenty-four men were already dead, and that one hundred five survivors had abandoned their ships to walk south across the Arctic.

Inuit witnesses provided accounts of starving Europeans, abandoned vessels, and bodies near the mainland coast. Victorian Britain rejected some of those reports, especially allegations that the final survivors had resorted to cannibalism. Later archaeological examination of human remains found cut marks consistent with the removal of flesh, supporting the broad substance of the Inuit testimony.

The discovery of HMS Erebus in 2014 and HMS Terror in 2016 solved one part of the mystery while opening another. Both wrecks were found in areas connected to Inuit knowledge. Yet the final movements of the crews, the cause of Franklin’s death, and the fate of the last survivors remain uncertain.
