Is It the Bipolar, or Is It Them?

Is It the Bipolar, or Is It Them?

Is it the bipolar, or is it them? When someone you love says something cruel in an episode, here's how to tell where the illness ends and their character begins.

Three questions you can actually run — time, pattern, repair — and the question underneath them that decides what you do next.

You've reread the message four times, looking for a line: on one side the illness, on the other the person you love. Here's the twist you're rarely told — it's almost never one or the other. An episode is a broken sensor: it doesn't rewrite someone's values, it strips out the filter and floods them with total conviction, so the ugliest thought arrives feeling like a truth. René, who created this channel and has lived this from the inside, describes it as feeling "clear," not unwell — which is exactly the trap.

So you get a test, not a verdict. Time: does it show up only in episodes (a state) or in the calm months too (a trait)? Pattern: does the behavior ride the illness, or get aimed and timed? Repair: when the weather clears, do they own it — or flash the diagnosis like a laminated card? One nuance matters: the person closest often catches the worst simply for being closest, so weigh "selective" harm as one signal of three, never alone. An illness can explain a behavior; it can't be a whole excuse for the pattern of a life. And the real question isn't "do they love me?" — it's "what are they doing with the illness?" That one has a visible answer.

▸ In this video:

• Why it's usually both — illness and character — at once

• The "broken sensor": why cruelty in an episode feels like truth

• Question 1 — time: state vs. trait

• Question 2 — pattern: symptoms don't aim, people do

• Question 3 — repair: explanation vs. excuse

• The lightning-rod nuance (one signal of three)

• The question underneath: "What are they doing with it?"
