With supply chains being reordered and national security concerns driving quasi-protectionist policies, there is a risk of the system fragmenting into a series of regulatory blocs. Where would that leave important trading powers that pursue independent trade policies but are invariably affected by the action of the major global players, the US, China and the EU? What role can these middle powers play in salvaging globalisation and renewing multilateralism? And how are they responding to the challenge, both individually and in collaboration with others?
