Episode 59 - Appalachian Ghosts and Legends - Alabama

On this episode, Christy and Kathy launch a new series on Appalachian Mountain ghosts by focusing on northeastern Alabama and its mix of documented history, folklore, and paranormal claims. They outline Appalachian geography and ancient formation, then discuss stories including Cherokee spirit guardians tied to sacred ridges, caves, and burial grounds (plus a personal family tale about a treasure map and a Native American guardian apparition). Other Alabama legends include Russell Cave and Cathedral Cavern shadow figures and voices, Creek War battlefield sounds, Rock Run Furnace ruins with glowing figures and industrial noises, Civil War soldier and horseman apparitions at Lookout Mountain, the Belle Mina phantom wagon linked to Governor Thomas Bibb, DeSoto Falls’ “crying woman” with possible animal explanations, the cryptid Alabama White Thang, Red Mountain ghost miners, Sand Mountain’s crying child legend, Highway 431’s vanishing hitchhiker, Little River Canyon ghost lights, and Huntsville’s “Dead Children’s Playground,” weighing the 1918 flu graves against an uncorroborated 1960s murder story.
